We always wanted these characters to feel authentically animatronic, and we didn’t want them to feel like mascots. Not only was the design and making them look and feel right paramount, it was also important that they were going to function properly so that we didn’t have to say like, oh man, they can’t do X, Y, Z, so we are going to have to lean on CGI in the end.Īnd that required having multiple versions of each character, which was super effective in terms of getting everything that we needed and getting the range of movement that we needed. Our whole approach going into this, and it was also our approach in collaboration with our VFX artists, was to approach the effects practically as possible.
